New Website for TRNA

Thanks to our newly elected Secretary/Treasurer, Ryan Anderson, the Tropical Ridge website has been completely revised with a lot of new and informative features. We are keeping this previous version available for anyone who would like to revisit our Association history over the last couple years. Older posts are organized chronologically in the archives to the right.

Crime Walks Schedule

Tropical Ridge Crime Walks

We will meet at the Nazarene Church parking lot on the corner of North D Street and 2nd Avenue North. Please note the earlier time - 5pm. Deputies from Lake Worth's Sheriff's Office District 14 will be walking with us.

As Halloween approaches vandalism and petty teenage type crime increases. It is very important to deter these crimes by participating in Neighborhood Crime Walks. Our visibility helps decrease crime in this area.

Tips for making it through Halloween safely.
Stay home with lights on and keep a watchful eye out for your neighbors. Even stay outside on your porch so everyone can see you and you can see everyone. If you see something suspicious PLEASE call the police. It is better to prevent a crime than permit a crime.

Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Meeting Tonight at 7 PM

Our regular monthly meeting was postponed from the first Monday of the Month in September because of the Labor Day holiday. We will meet tonight, Monday, Sept. 8th, at 7 pm at out regular meeting place, the Church of the Nazarene on the corner of D Street and 2nd Avenue North. John Farinelli, building inspector for the city of Lake Worth will be our guest speaker.

Because of the Labor Day Weekend, we are cancelling the meeting we usually hold on the first Monday of the Month and rescheduling for the following Monday. The September meeting of the Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Assn will be Monday, September 8th at 7pm at our usual meeting place, The Nazarene Church on the Corner of D Street and 2nd Avenue North.

Tropical Ridge Newsletter ~ Spring/Summer 2008

“Helping to make Tropical Ridge the place we are proud to call our home”

The purpose of our neighborhood association is to educate ourselves on matters of concern and interest to the people who live and work here. The boundaries for our Association include the area from the east side of I-95 to the west side of Dixie Highway and from the south side of Lucerne Avenue to the south side of 10th Avenue North. There are over 2000 families and businesses in Tropical Ridge. Our meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at 7 pm at the First Nazarene Church on the corner of D Street and 2nd Avenue North. Everyone is welcome. Membership is open to all residents, property owners, renters, business owners and employees – all our neighbors. We share more than simple geography. This is the special place we are proud to call our home.

Tropical Ridge Elects Officers for 2008

Vince Rogers is our new President. Carolyn Deli continues to serve as Vice President and Cristina Arauja is our new Secretary/Treasurer. Congratulations and Thank you for stepping up to serve.

Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Yard Sale

On Saturday, May 24th, we will hold our first neighborhood wide yard sale at the First Church of the Nazarene west side parking lot on C Street and 2nd Avenue. This is our first fundraising effort and we offer space and a table for anyone to sell their own “family treasures” or you can donate those unwanted small appliances, CD’s, tools, gently used toys or clothing items to the Tropical Ridge booth. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be available for a very reasonable charge. Tropical Ridge does not collect member dues, so this is a great way to help us continue to meet our goal of cleaning up the neighborhood and making this the place we can all be proud to call our home.

Neighborhood Clean-Ups

Tropical Ridge has taken a pro-active position on messy and trash-strewn vacant lots. Since February, we have cleaned up five lots on C Street and E Street. On May 14th, Channel 12 did a special report on our efforts in their Clean It Up investigation series. Announcements for upcoming clean ups are always posted on our website at http://www.tropicalridge.blogspot.com/ and everyone is invited to join in. It’s truly amazing how much even a small group of people can accomplish in a few hours. The Public Works Dept. has been great to supply dumpsters and pick-up for us at all our clean-ups.

COMING SOON . . . The CRA, Community Redevelopment Agency, in cooperation with the city has committed to funding 6-8 new trash receptacles for our neighborhood. The city will add these to their regular collection schedule. These new receptacles will be placed in close proximity to the convenience stores in our neighborhood, where littering has been a long term problem.

TRNA Crime Walks

Heartfelt thanks to Lake Worth Police for their active participation in our weekly Crime Walks. Each week, two or more officers have joined with residents as we walk the neighborhood raising awareness and sharing our concerns for the safety of our families and property. These walks are a great opportunity to meet neighbors and more importantly, this is how we will take our streets back from criminals. Check the website for dates and times of upcoming walks.

Tropical Ridge Yard of the Month

Congratulations to all our Yard of the Month recipients since our last newsletter.
Burger King Restaurant on Dixie Highway, The Lake Worth Towers at 1500 Lucerne Avenue, Frank Hernandez of 902 North B Street and Bill and Hilda Henderson of 905 North B Street. Each new Yard of the Month is chosen by the previous month’s winner. Congratulations and Thanks for keeping your properties and our neighborhood so beautiful.

Tropical Ridge and the CRA

The Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is an organization created and appointed by the Lake Worth City Commission, in accordance with Florida statutes, whose mission is to redevelop specific areas of the city which are run down, blighted, or in need of new development. The CRA district extends well into the Tropical Ridge neighborhood and we benefit from many of the projects they are able to fund. CRA projects include new sidewalks along 2nd Ave North and along North E Street, new streetlights, neighborhood clean up effort in conjunction with Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., and funding for overtime police patrols within the neighborhood. We have received two Community Aid Grants from the CRA and a third is in the approval process. The CRA offers a Neighborhood Enhancement program and a Home Repair Grant program to assist homeowners with exterior beautification, landscaping and correction of code violations. Summer Safety Tips for Parents

Be sure to go over the rules with your children about whose homes they can visit when you’re not there and discuss the boundaries of where they can and can’t go in the neighborhood.

Make sure children know their names, address, and telephone numbers and how to use the telephone. Be sure they know what to do in case of an emergency and how to reach you using cellular numbers. Children should have a neighbor or trusted adult they can call if they’re scared or there’s an emergency.

Caution children to keep the door locked and not to open the door or talk to anyone who comes to the door when they are home alone. If you have arranged for a family friend or relative to stop by, make sure your child feels comfortable being alone with that person. Make certain that they understand not to tell anyone who calls that they are home alone.

Don’t drop your children off at malls, movies, video arcades, beaches or parks. These are not safe places for children to be alone. Make certain that a responsible adult supervises your younger children at all times when they are outside and away from home.

Teach your children in whose car they may ride. Children should be cautioned never to approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless accompanied by a parent or trusted adult.

Make sure your children know to stay away from pools, canals, or other bodies of water without adult supervision.

Since daylight lasts longer, be sure your children know their curfew and know to check in with you if they are going to be late. If you allow your children to play outside after dark, make sure they have reflective clothing on and that they stay close to home.

Choose babysitters with care. Obtain references from family, friends, and neighbors. Many states now have registries for public access to check criminal history or sex-offender status. Observe the babysitter’s interaction with your children, and ask your children how they feel about the babysitter.

Check out camp and other summer programs before enrolling your child. See if a background screening check is completed on the individuals working with your children. Make sure that there will be adult supervision of your children at all times, and make sure you are made aware of all activities and field trips offered by the camp or program.

Investigate daycare settings thoroughly before placing your child. Make certain that the center or family daycare home is licensed and the parents are free to come and go as they wish. Observe personnel and activities several times before making your decision and visit unannounced after placement.

Be sure all custody documents are in order and certified copies are available in case your child is not returned from summer visitation.

Always listen to your children and keep the lines of communication open. Your children are your best source for determining if everything is okay. Teach your children to get out of dangerous or uncomfortable situations right away and practice basic safety skills with them. Make sure they know they can tell you about anything that happens to them that make them feel uncomfortable.

If your child is required to take medications, make sure there is always an ample supply on hand, and that a responsible adult will be available to administer that medication.

Sharing information and news about neighborhood events is one of the main goals of our Association. This newsletter is distributed at our meetings, neighborhood businesses, churches and other gathering places. Tropical Ridge meetings are announced on the illuminated signs outside City Hall and on yard signs placed throughout the neighborhood.
